Am Shalom – Reform Congregation in Glencoe, Illinois - Birth, Baby Naming, Brit Milah (Bris)
Birth, Baby Naming, Brit Milah (Bris)
Babies are a blessing that Judaism celebrates with various traditions, both ancient and modern. The ritual of the brit milah, the traditional circumcision and covenantal welcoming on the 8th day of a boy's life, can be held in the home or synagogue. The ritual of a naming ceremony can be held in conjunction with the brit milah or at a separate date. Baby girls are welcomed into the covenant through the ceremony of naming, which can be held on the 8th day or at a later date, usually within the first year of life. These ceremonies, too, can be held in the synagogue or home.
